COURSE ASSESSMENT

Testing conducted throughout this online Commercial Vehicle Drivers’ Hours of Service course is designed to reinforce the information presented. A mark of 80% must be achieved in order to receive a certificate of completion. Participants are able to repeat the course twice if the pass mark is not achieved. Supplemental materials necessary to complete this course can be accessed online.

CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION

Upon successful completion of this online course, a certificate of completion will be available for download and printing.

Hours of service requirements:

A driver must have 10 consecutive hours off-duty in a day

  • Drivers cannot drive more than 13 hours in a day
  • Drivers cannot drive after 14 hours on-duty in a day
  • Drivers cannot drive more than 13 hours after having at least eight hours off-duty
  • Drivers cannot drive after having been on-duty for 14 hours after having a period of at least eight hours off-duty
  • An operator must designate a cycle for each of their drivers to follow
  • There are only two cycles available, a seven day cycle or a fourteen day cycle
  • For a period of seven consecutive days a driver cannot drive after having been on-duty for seventy hours
  • For a period fourteen consecutive days a driver cannot drive after having been on-duty for one hundred twenty hours. Drivers following this cycle cannot drive after seventy hours on duty without having taken twenty four consecutive hours of off duty time
  • On any day all drivers must receive at least twenty four consecutive hours off duty in the preceding fourteen days
  • A driver may only switch the cycle they are on if they start a new cycle
  • To start a new cycle, a driver on the seven day cycle must take thirty six consecutive off duty hours
  • To start a new cycle, a driver on the fourteen day cycle must take seventy two consecutive off duty hours

A daily log must contain the following:

  • Driver’s name and names of any co-drivers
  • Trip date and start time
  • The cycle that the driver is on
  • Start of day and end of day odometer reading
  • Total driving distance driven by driver
  • The number plate of each vehicle and trailer
  • Legal name of the operator
  • Driver’s home terminal address
  • Main business address of the operator
  • Start/end times for each duty status
  • Location to be indentified where the driver’s duty status changes
  • Total time that was spent in each duty status for each day
  • Driver signature

The driver is not required to keep a daily log if the driver:

  • Is driving the vehicle only within a radius of 160 kilometres of the days starting location
  • Is returning to the same location from which they started
  • Is working for only one operator that day

If the driver is not required to keep a daily log then the operator must keep a record for the day showing:

  • Driving date
  • The driver’s name
  • Location where the driver started and finished the day
  • The cycle that the driver is following
  • The hour of which each duty status started and ended
  • Total number of hours the driver spent in each duty status
